David Leitch to Bring Gears of War to Netflix as Script Development Moves Forward
Los Angeles, August 2025 — Netflix’s ambitious Gears of War adaptation is officially in motion, with action filmmaker David Leitch set to lead the project. Known for hits like Bullet Train, Atomic Blonde, and John Wick, Leitch is negotiating to direct and produce the film alongside Kelly McCormick under their 87North Productions banner.
According to Polygon, Netflix views Leitch as an ideal match to capture the explosive action and dark tone of the blockbuster Xbox franchise (polygon.com). The script is being written by Jon Spaihts, the screenwriter behind Dune and Doctor Strange, ensuring a strong blend of science fiction depth and cinematic spectacle (windowscentral.com).
Speaking to Windows Central, McCormick confirmed the film is actively being written and emphasized the excitement from both Netflix and The Coalition, the studio behind the games. While not tied directly to the upcoming 2026 release of Gears of War: E-Day, the movie will remain faithful to the franchise’s core spirit (windowscentral.com).
In addition to the live-action film, Netflix is also working on an adult animated series, broadening the ways fans can engage with the Gears universe (as.com).
While no release date or cast has been announced, fans won’t have to wait long to revisit the franchise. The remastered Gears of War: Reloaded drops on August 26, 2025, across Xbox, PC, and PlayStation 5. The new title, Gears of War: E-Day, will follow in 2026, coinciding with the series’ 20th anniversary.
With Netflix’s backing, Leitch’s action expertise, and Spaihts’ storytelling, the project finally appears to be breaking free from nearly two decades of developm
ent limbo.
