Russia Backs Putin–Zelensky Summit, But Quick Peace Doubtful
19th August 2025 – Russia has expressed support for a possible summit between President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, but signaled that expectations for a quick peace deal should remain low.
According to Reuters, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met with U.S. President Donald Trump and European leaders in Washington, where discussions centered on possible security guarantees for Ukraine. While Trump pledged support, the details of such guarantees remain unclear.
According to the Washington Post, the White House stated that President Putin had in principle agreed to meet with Zelensky. However, Moscow has not officially confirmed this, with Russian officials stressing that any summit would need to be carefully prepared.
Russia’s Foreign Minister, Sergey Lavrov, emphasized that talks should proceed “step by step,” beginning at the expert level, according to Politico Europe. This careful tone reflects Moscow’s reluctance to rush into an agreement, despite international pressure.
Analysts also warn that Russia’s demands—particularly its insistence on being part of any future security arrangements for Ukraine—make a rapid peace resolution unlikely. According to the Financial Times, such conditions remain unacceptable to Kyiv.
For now, the idea of a Putin–Zelensky summit has generated hope but also skepticism. According to Axios, even if all sides agree, organizing the meeting will be difficult, and the ongoing military strikes suggest that peace may still be far
off.
